Why Recess?
In 2022, I moved to Brooklyn after COVID. I was surrounded by millions of people but feeling completely alone.
There were plenty of parties, sure. But trying to make real friends at 1 AM in a dark, loud room? Not exactly the vibe.
I remembered how easy making friends was during actual recess—you'd walk up to someone and ask, "can I get on the swing too?" Just like that, you had a playmate. No pretense. No performance. Just pure, unfiltered connection.
So I started hosting events where people could actually talk. Mid-week, after work. Real conversations over a cocktail or two.
What started as hanging out with a few friends has grown into a community of thousands.
But the numbers don't matter as much as the moments: watching strangers exchange numbers and make plans for next week. Hearing someone say "I was really struggling to make friends, and Recess changed that for me."
This is a community built on intention, celebration, and the idea that everyone deserves a playground—even as grown ups.

How we gather
Happy Hours and Day Parties
We host mid-week hangs and Saturday afternoon celebrations where you can actually hear the person next to you. Think: curated moments, good music and conversations that flow as smoothly as the drinks.
We partner with queer, woman, and BIPOC-owned venues because our dollars should support our community.
Field Trips
Beach trips. Rock climbing. Broadway shows. Hot yoga. Park hangs. Writing workshops. We believe the best friendships form when you're trying something new together.
These aren't just activities—they're 10-20 person experiences designed to help you connect a little more easily than in a crowded party.
